ALICANTE swung into full terror alert after a man dumped a rucksack on Calle Pintor Lorenzo Casanova in the centre of the city and then shouted that it was going to explode. The authorities cordoned off the area around the “bomb” and called in explosives experts but it turned out to be a false alarm and the rucksack contained nothing more lethal than clothing. However the hoax had caused considerable disruption and was attended by several police, specialist dog handlers and the bomb squad. A 43 year old Algerian man was later tracked down, then arrested and charged with public disorder offences. He has no police record and his motives for the offence are unclear at this stage.
