A group of Costa Blanca Hotel chiefs met this week to discuss measures aimed at curbing unsocial behaviour caused by groups of drunken guests. The one day conference, organised by GrupoVía, took place at the MeliáVillaitana Hotel in Benidorm and was entitled Gran DebateHotelero.
Concerned delegates, spoke of the need to use modern technology to filter out guests, who could cause potential disruptions to other hotel users, during the booking process.
In addition to preventing groups of stags and hens booking into hotels in the region, they also called for stricter regulations and more severe penalties to anyone breaking the rules on drunk and disorderly conduct.
During the debate, the businessmen revealed the are already taking measures to fight against drunken tourism, specifically by placing their own, “filters or access criteria aimed at controlling group bookings of rooms.”
Delegates also demanded that authorities take a “more rigorous approach when enforcing the law against drunken behaviour and provide more support to improve the image of Benidorm”.
The conference also tackled the controversial government backed Imserso Programme, which provides off season holidays to qualifying pensioners at a set price paid to the hotel for each night.
This follows a recent decision by the Treasury backed, Central Contractual Court (TACRC), which dismissed an appeal by the Spanish Confederation of Hotels and Tourist Accommodation (CEHAT), against the specifications of the Imserso programme.
The Hoteliers believe that the current rate of 21 euros per day, all-inclusive,per person, “does not sufficiently compensate hotels economically, not even those who need to fill rooms out of season,” and puts off other tourists.
The consensus decision from the conference delegates, was that Benidorm abandons the Imserso programme and targets other tourist profiles instead.
