AIRBNB and HomeAway, both online operators who specialise in holidaymakers sharing space with homeowners, have said they are going to court to seek clarity on a recent ruling by the Valencian government. This resulted in them and other similar “sofa surfer” operators being fined for advertising unregistered properties on their sites. They believe this contradicts a previous EU wide ruling about sharing sites and the fact that they did not need registration numbers. They also say that due to the nature of their business the ruling will harm the Valencian householders who rent out their property as much as the company themselves.
