PROPOSALS are going through Parliament to make it easier for landlords to deal with squatters as well as tenants who don’t pay their rent. The ruling Partido Popular drew up the legislation with Ciudadanos although much of the rest of the house is against the measures, saying it gives too much power to landlords.

Increased powers for police to remove occupants if they are suspected of dealing drugs was in the original bill but this has now been watered down as a compromise to those opposed to the overall bill. If passed, those who do not plan to live in their houses permanently such as prospective holiday home owners may feel more confident about entering the Spanish housing market.
