Barcelona and Real Madrid both suffered surprising La Liga defeats on Wednesday night in their first domestic defeats of the season, but they remain in first and second place respectively, with 13 points each to their name.

It was the first time that the big two of Spanish football were beaten on the same day since January 2015.

Barca coach Valverde rung the changes after his team could only draw with Girona last weekend, but the champions produced a hapless performance as they conceded two goals in 68 seconds, as went down two-one to a Leganes side that had yet to win this season.

Real Madrid kicked off later in the evening, and they missed their chance to go top, after succumbing three-nil away to Sevilla.

Real now entertain city rivals Atletico Madrid this Saturday evening, who are two points behind them in the third spot, whilst Barcelona will seek a quick return to form with their 4.15 pm home kick-off against Athletic Bilbao.
