THE University of Valencia has patented a new type of prosthetic. The implant can be used for replacement hips, knees, elbows and shoulders and it is safer and less likely to require future intervention once fitted said its developers.

Professor Antionio Silvestre, head of orthopaedics at Valencia Hospital was also involved in the revolutionary design, which consists of expandable polymers which are easier to customise to each patient’s needs. More than half of these type of procedures currently require further intervention and it is hoped that the new prosthetic will significantly reduce these, with obvious benefits for both patients and the health service.
