THE tragic death of a young mother in the Alicante region which was originally thought to be a suicide has taken a dramatic twist after her partner was arrested this Monday. The emergency services received a call from the boyfriend of 29 year old Sheyla on Sunday morning, saying he had been woken by their baby then went downstairs to find Sheyla in a pool of blood on the floor with her throat cut. She had a knife next to her and the authorities first told the press that “the main line of investigation is a possible suicide”.
However, after an autopsy was conducted the Guardia Civil reported that the dead woman’s partner, named as Jorge (aged 34), had been arrested on a charge of murder and gender violence. This development came about after the autopsy showed that the fatal wounds could not have been self inflicted.
The tragedy occurred in a rural area outside the small inland town of Planes, near Alcoy. Apparently the couple, both Spaniards, had been together for about a year. They are from Alcoy and locals said that since living in Planes they had kept themselves to themselves and very few people seemed to know them. They had a baby three months ago who was lying next to the victim when she died but is unharmed.
