BARCELONA is to ban high-emission vehicles from most of the city during daytime hours from January 1st.

Practically the entire Catalan capital, except for some industrial areas and satellite towns will have the new law enforced over a 95 square kilometre area.

The ban will hit older cars and be enforced between 7.00 am and 8.00 pm on a weekday, with a minimum fine to be imposed of 100 euros for those who choose to flout it.

From January 1st, a three-month trial will take place so everyone has a chance to get used to the idea, but fines will start to apply from April 1st.
