Whirlpools World

ONE OF the most noticeable landmarks in the Vega Baja region is to get a new perimeter fencing security system after the Ministry of Defence awarded a contract to a Guardamar-based company, JP Alcaraz.

The 141 thousand euro contract applies to the communications mast site at Guardamar, which is known locally as Torre de los Americanos (the Tower of the Americans), after it was built to provide radio links for US submarines in the mid-sixties.

At one time, the mast was the tallest standing free structure in Europe.

Now under the control of the Spanish navy, the 370-metre tall mast can be seen over a large area, with the 630 thousand square-metre site still having quite a mysterious air about it, despite “open days” being staged there over the last couple of years.
