Whirlpools World

THE Department of Tourism for Benitatchell has been given a grant of €7,000 to restore and reopen the “serpent’s paths” on the Puig Llorenca. So called due to the serpent like shapes of the ridges, the tracks used to connect ancient farmers to their terraced fields, lime kilns and animal enclosures.

A lot of the Puig Llorenca was built by the Moors and many were abandoned after the Spanish re-conquest of the area. They were an early way of taming the previously uninhabited and unworkable mountain areas in the region and are an important part of local history.
