ELCHE Town Hall cut down 16,000 palm trees last year compared to the 40,000 from the year before, an indication that the fight against the palm weevil is being won, according to Mayor Antonio Garcia. A strategy of “increased vigilance, better treatments and attempting to save trees rather than fell all infected palms” has finally been paying dividends said Mayor Garcia. The Elche palm groves are designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the five year battle against the weevils has seen a massive decrease in the iconic trees.
